Happiness in Austerity – Buddha
I was introduced to the teachings of Buddha for the first time when I was in middle school. Those days the ‘eight fold path’ to salvation was just another chapter in my history book. As years went by I realized that every religion offered some check points to regulate the conduct of humans in the society, be it Vedas in Hinduism or Ten Commandments in Christianity. Every religion prescribed almost the same techniques to attain freedom from shackles of life. However, one thing which caught my attention in Buddha’s teachings was his emphasis on ‘happiness in austerity’. All of us want to be surrounded by good people and live happier and joyful lives but the fact remains that we hardly get to learn anything from such happy moments. It’s only the bad time which helps us evolve spiritually and makes us wiser. It only happens in the darkest hour of our life that we shut the doors to the outside world and turn inward. It seems highly impractical, insensitive and unrealistic to ask someone to treat the most horrible and soul wrenching moment of his life as a blessing in disguise but …that’s what it is IN FACT.

The time that we spend dreaming, can either be blissful or be nightmarish, depending on the type of situations manifested in the dream. A horrifying dream rattles our brain to the extent that we heave a sigh a relief the moment we are catapulted to our conscious state. I am sure you can recall such instances when you might have woken up with a start from a scary dream and instantly felt relieved, realizing that it was ‘just a bad dream’. Remember how painful it had seemed to be a part of that reality which you had lived in your dream? Well, that seemingly endless saga of pain and horror that you had experienced in your dream, had in fact, lasted only for a few minutes. Point is….the intensity of our pain is time related- longer the duration of time, greater seems to be the sufferance. Again, it’s just a perception. We tend to respond to our situations in different ways, depending on where we stand and from where we look at it. (Like I mentioned earlier, a few minutes of dreaming feels like hours in a dream state) For instance, in a lucid dream, where we know that we are dreaming, we are aware..

Ever asked yourself one intriguing yet simple question….Why am I the way I am? Well, it might sound a bit crazy but, honestly, I’ve tried to figure out many times, the reason for my being the way I am. I don’t mean my physical appearance but my mental and psychological framework, my perspective, the way I handle life situations and my attitude towards life and people in general. What makes me different (in a good or bad way) from those around me? Why am I different from others, in the first place? There has got to be some valid reason behind the stark dissimilarity existing between the species of the same class. What could be the best explanation for two children to be like poles apart, despite being born of the same parents and raised in the same environment? Why does one kid love his paint brush and color palette and the other one, robotic machines? Truly, there’s got be something more to it than the simple genetic and hereditary explanation for varied behavioral patterns manifested by human beings.

We all need some kind of inspiration to walk the arduous path of life. In absence of motivation, the journey can be horrendous enough while wading through difficult waters, staggering across the sandy deserts in blistering heat, climbing steep mountains or finding way out of the woods. (that’s how life situations appear to be). Everyone needs a driving force in life to move forward and without that magical force, it becomes nearly impossible to accomplish goals. For most people in today’s world (and rightly so), money and success are two great sources of inspiration but for some, ‘love’ still reigns as the most powerfulmotivational factor. People falling in the latter category are generally the ones who don’t play by the rules and simply follow their instincts. They are unconventional and don’t seem to understand the norms of the dogmatic and (supposedly) orderly society. All I know is that they can work miracles if they have love in their lives but the down side is that they tend to lead aimless and dissatisfied lives till the time their craving for love is not satiated.

What can be worse than waking up to a discerning fact, one fine morning, and realizing that the person whom you thought of spending the rest of your life with, is nothing short of a devious psychopath? I don’t blame you for not being able to decipher his sociopathic behavior while you dated him as I am sure he must have mesmerized you by his charming and condescending ways. That’s how such people project themselves in public. Perhaps they have a deep seated desire to get what they want, be it attention, appreciation, affection or recognition. This kind of behavior is, normally, an offshoot of a twisted or a neglected childhood, consistent failures in life, poverty (especially in childhood) or a constant nagging by an abusive parent or a partner / spouse. Well, there is an exception to this rule, though. We see children with psychopathic traits born and raised in homes of loving and caring parents. It’s tough for the parents to deal with such children; somehow nothing seems to work for such kids and finally the parents give up which makes things even worse.

Sounds weird but not far from truth! The angels, too, can sometimes forget their purpose of being sent to this earth. They can also feel lost and distraught (the way we feel most of the times) as soon as they step into the earth’s environment and breathe in the same (polluted) air that we pump into our lungs every moment of our lives. Such incredibly delusional is the power of this Matrix. Now if angels can suffer from partial amnesia and forget their connection with the Almighty, we have no reasons to be harsh on ourselves by burning in the fire of guilt for having done all those things that we should not have done. Learned people have rightly said that God does not believe in punishing; He only forgives if one shows remorse for not having shown complete faith in Him and for having walked miles and miles away from the ‘eternal light’ into the darkness of drudgery and ignorance.

I don’t call myself a spiritualist; I am only a humble seeker. Growing up in a conventional, orthodox and a staunchly religious environment (almost to the extent of fanaticism) has its own set of disadvantages. Although it has a major role to play in instilling discipline and values in the younger generation, yet, it can create havoc with a child’s psyche by making him a slave of certain pre-set and preconceived notions which, at times, can continue for a whole lifetime without the victim being aware of his own ‘unhealthy’ state of mind. I call it unhealthy as the whole idea of ‘spirituality’ gets screwed up. (Pardon me for the language but I couldn’t find a better word). Perhaps that’s what happened with me.

Souls can be more confused than human beings. Imagine the trauma they have to undergo by being stranded in no man’s land and without a body to carry out God’s purpose. Imagine that you, so desperately, want to be heard by people around you but they don’t see or hear you and pass right through you as if you were nothing but thin air. How would you feel? Picture your predicament! Wouldn’t you get tired and weary of your existence as a wandering soul? Don’t you think that coming back to the earth in human form would seem like a better option than roaming aimlessly for ages without a purpose?”

Having read hundreds of articles endorsing the ‘power of good over evil’ and the supremacy of God almighty, I often wondered if ‘positive forces’ were actually more powerful than ‘negative’ ones. This, in fact, gives birth to the most controversial subject of the ancient and the present times–-Is God more powerful than Evil? If He is, then why does Evil exist at all? Does it mean that God does not have the power to eradicate Evil as if He had such absolute powers then Evil would not have the nerve to mess around with His creation. At least that is what seems to be a logical inference.
